How To Research Koch Money in Higher Education

This page walks you through some simple tools for finding out if you have Koch money on your campus.

Step 1: Is there Charles Koch Foundation Money on Your Campus?

The Charles Koch foundation (CKF) is a non-profit (yeah, I know, crazy…), which means  plutocratic libertarians that donate money to it receive tax write-offs to build a political machine that pushes legislation that increases their personal and corporate wealth. But it also means that the CKF files 990s tax forms. While non-profits don’t have to list where they receive their donations from (yeah, I know, crazy…) they do have to report what organizations the give donations to. So, if the CKF gave a donation to your college or university, it will show up on the CKF’s 990. Thank goodness Polluter Watch (Greenpeace) and UnKoch My Campus maintain a searchable database of which campuses receive CKF donations. If your school shows up in these databases, go to the CKF’s 990. Click on “Full Filling” for the year you are interested in. Control-F to find your institution.

Step 2: Search Names Using a Customized Search Engine

I have put together a Google Customized Search Engine (CSE) that allows you to search many of the Koch-funded groups (CKF)

Targeted Google Website Search

Do a Google search for the CKF looking for the name of your institution. For example, if looking for Trinity College, enter the following into a Google search box:

“trinity college” site:*.charleskochfoundation.org/*

Then reverse the site search to look for mentions of Koch on your institution’s website. For example, enter the following into a Google search box:

“Charles Koch” site:www.trincoll.edu

Step 3: Google Website Search of Koch Network (#KochNetworkSearch

Step 4: Search Any Names or Organizations that Show Up On (#KochWatchDogs)
